Jean-Michel Basquiat’s contributions to the history of art and his explorations of multifaceted cultural phenomena––including music, the Black experience, pop culture, Black American sports figures, literature, and other sources––will be showcased through immersive environments providing unique insight into the late artist’s creative life and his singular voice that propelled a social and cultural narrative that continues to this day.

Organized, curated and Executive Produced by The Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat as adminstrated by his sisters Jean-Michel's sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveuax, this exhibition of over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera, and artifacts tell the story of Jean-Michel from an intimate perspective, intertwining his artistic endeavors with his personal life, influences, and the times in which he lived.

Sir David Adjaye OBE leads the exhibition design for Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure©. Renowned for designing many notable buildings around the world, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Adjaye Associates transforms five of the ground floor spaces of The Grand with the remarkable story of Jean-Michel told through the lens of his family.

Please note that visitors to the exhibition may be photographed, videotaped, or otherwise recorded. By attending, you grant the exhibition permission to use photographs and/or audiovisual recordings in which you appear for archival, documentary, publicity, advertising, or other purposes.

venue information

The Grand LA is a visionary public-private partnership with the Los Angeles Grand Avenue Authority to revitalize downtown LA's cultural and civic core with a mix of commercial, retail, cultural and residential apartments stitched together with grand public spaces and world-class architecture. The Grand LA was designed to be a dynamic city center, including over 176,000 square feet of retail space anchored by chef-driven restaurants and a collection of shops, a hotel and luxury residences.

Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, The Grand LA complements the adjacent Disney Concert Hall and connects with the nearby arts and cultural institutions through Gehry’s distinct design. Gehry’s vision for The Grand LA was to create a centerpiece for Grand Avenue that promotes community gatherings and cultural performances in an open space, in addition to providing shopping, dining and residential experiences. Nearby arts and culture venues include the Music Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Colburn School of Music, The Broad Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, forming a dynamic mixed-use district fitting for the cultural center of Los Angeles.
